Rosecliff

Newport, RI

Rosecliff is a Gilded Age mansion wedding venue in Newport, RI, set on Bellevue Avenue overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, one of the historic Newport Mansions preserved by the Preservation Society of Newport County. Modeled after the Grand Trianon at Versailles and designed by architect Stanford White, Rosecliff is the only Newport mansion available for wedding ceremonies and receptions, with the largest ballroom in Newport and an oceanfront back lawn for outdoor vows. The museum hosts one wedding each evening, accommodating up to 220 guests across its ballroom and adjoining Salon.

What makes Rosecliff a standout Newport wedding venue?

Few venues anywhere carry this much genuine history. Built between 1899 and 1902 for Nevada silver heiress Theresa Fair Oelrichs, Rosecliff hosted some of the Gilded Age’s most legendary parties, and its film credits include The Great Gatsby, True Lies, and 27 Dresses. Couples say their vows on the back lawn overlooking the rocky Atlantic coastline from Memorial Day through the end of September, or in the Salon for an indoor ceremony, before moving to the covered terrace for cocktails around the fountain and into the all-white ballroom, the largest private ballroom in Newport, for dinner and dancing beneath painted ceilings and glittering chandeliers. The famous heart-shaped Sweetheart Staircase off the ballroom is one of the most requested backdrops for first looks and portraits in all of Newport. Because Rosecliff is a working museum, access begins at 6 PM after the property closes to the public, giving couples exclusive use of the mansion and its 8 acres of manicured lawns and gardens for a five-hour rental window. Reviews consistently describe the flow from lobby to ceremony to terrace to ballroom as effortless, with museum event staff on hand throughout, and couples repeatedly say the architecture and lighting alone make decoration almost unnecessary.

Lodging and parking

Rosecliff does not offer overnight guest accommodations, since it operates as a historic house museum rather than a resort, so out-of-town guests typically stay at hotels and inns throughout Newport, many within walking distance along Bellevue Avenue and downtown. Complimentary on-site parking is available for wedding guests, a genuine convenience given how difficult street parking can be in Newport during the busy wedding season. A ballroom with painted ceilings and an oceanfront lawn each reward lighting that plays off the historic architecture, which is where Black Diamond comes in.

How does Black Diamond produce events at Rosecliff?

A Gilded Age ballroom with painted ceilings and towering arched windows rewards lighting that complements the historic architecture rather than competing with it, all on LED fixtures suited to a landmark property. We bring custom uplighting and run sound that carries an oceanfront lawn or Salon ceremony into terrace cocktails and a ballroom reception. Our DJ and MC talent keeps the floor moving, photo booths add a keepsake, live musicians set the tone for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and our photography and videography team captures the Sweetheart Staircase, the oceanfront terrace, the manicured gardens, and the ballroom’s chandeliers. For the corporate galas and private events the Preservation Society also hosts at its Newport mansions, we bring full corporate event production.

Common questions about weddings at Rosecliff

Where do ceremonies take place? Outdoors on the back lawn overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, available from Memorial Day through the end of September, or indoors in the Salon.

What is the rain plan? If the weather turns, the ceremony moves indoors to the Salon; for summer weddings with more than 140 guests, a tent is required as a precaution even if it ultimately isn’t needed.

How many guests can it hold? Up to 220 for an outdoor ceremony and up to 160 for dinner and dancing in the Ballroom, with the adjoining Salon seating an additional 60.

Does Black Diamond do corporate events here too? Yes. The Preservation Society hosts corporate galas and private events at its Newport mansions, and we bring full corporate event production.
