ONE DAY SHY OF 12: THE BIRTH OF SMP
2005 SEPT

A NAME INSPIRED BY A BOSTON DJ LEGEND
Boston radio legend DJ Lady D — affectionately known as Lady D or simply D — left an indelible mark not just on the airwaves, but on our identity. A trailblazer in the city’s music and nightlife scene, Lady D had a gift for spotting talent, shaping culture, and giving power to names. It was she who coined the term “Spinner’s,” which inspired the original name Spinner Music Productions — a nod to the artistry of DJs and the energy they bring to every event. That name carried us through our early days and evolved over time into SMP, and now proudly stands as Black Diamond. Her voice, spirit, and belief in our vision continue to echo through everything we do, reminding us of our roots and the power of a name given with love and intention.

THE 2020 COVID LOCKDOWNS
In early 2020, as the world came to a sudden halt, so did the events industry — and with it, every gathering that our business was built to create. The COVID-19 lockdowns delivered a crushing blow to event production companies everywhere, but instead of shutting down, we adapted, innovated, and fought to survive. Through resilience, creativity, and an unwavering belief in the power of connection, we weathered the storm. Today, we are stronger, sharper, and more passionate than ever, proving that even in the darkest times, the spirit of celebration cannot be silenced.

BLACK DIAMOND WINS NACE/NACE BOSTON EVENT PRODUCTION OF THE YEAR AWARD
In a year that turned the event industry upside down, Black Diamond pulled off something truly unforgettable — and we just bagged the NACE/NACE Boston Event Production of the Year Award for it! The Empty Wedding, produced by the Massachusetts Live Events Coalition, was a powerful statement during the heart of the 2020 lockdowns. It was our way of showing that live events could still be safe, meaningful, and impactful, even in the most challenging times. Recorded in October 2020, when the industry was all but decimated, this production wasn’t just about creativity — it was about resilience. We’re honored to have been part of an event that spoke to the heart of what we do and to stand tall in a year where we all had to fight to survive.

INTRODUCING BLACK DIAMOND
Black Diamond Event Production officially launched on February 14, 2024—an intentional nod to both love and bold beginnings. The rebrand from Spinner Music Productions—widely known in the industry as SMP—was a long-considered evolution for our team, yet came as a complete surprise to many in the event industry. The response, however, exceeded all expectations, with overwhelming support and excitement from peers and clients alike.
