2024 Became Black Diamond

It started with a kid, a contract, and a set at the Medford Police Department Christmas party. One day before his twelfth birthday. That kid became a national award winner, a two-term ILEA Boston VP, and the force behind one of New England's most recognized event production companies. This is how it happened.

    One Day Shy of Twelve

One day before his twelfth birthday, David "DJ" Buono signed his first DJ contract and took the stage at the Medford Police Department's family Christmas party. What could have been a novelty became something undeniable. He read the room. He moved the crowd. He was eleven years old, and he already had it.

That single night planted the foundation of what would grow over two decades into Black Diamond Event Production, one of the most recognized event production companies in New England.

    Named by a Boston Legend

Boston radio icon Lady D had a rare gift: she could see where something was going before anyone else could. A trailblazer in the city's music and nightlife scene, she was the one who coined the term "Spinner's" for what David was quietly building. That name inspired Spinner Music Productions, the company that would carry us through our formative years and evolve into SMP.

Her fingerprints are still on this brand's DNA. Her voice still echoes in every room we fill.

    DECA Dimensions: Member Turned Mogul

In November 2009, DECA Dimensions Magazine spotlighted David Buono as their "DECA Member Turned Mogul," the first major national print feature on what was quietly becoming something significant. The recognition arrived during Spinner Music Productions' formative years and named the entrepreneurial drive that had been building since that first December gig seven years earlier.

An empty event venue during the COVID-19 lockdowns of 2020 — Spinner Music Productions adapted and led industry recovery efforts

    The Industry Goes Dark

In March 2020, COVID-19 stopped the events world overnight. Every venue closed. Every contract cancelled. Every room went silent. For a company built on the energy of a live crowd, this was existential.

But instead of shutting down, we showed up. We led. We joined the Massachusetts Live Events Coalition, invested in ILEA, and helped the industry fight for survival. When the lights came back on, we were still standing and sharper for everything we had been through.

    Rising Star Award, ILEA Boston

Just one year after joining the International Live Events Association, David Buono was named the ILEA Boston Rising Star. The recognition came in the middle of the pandemic, in part because of his commitment to the industry's recovery — he wasn't only building his own company, he was fighting for the entire events community.

He later served two terms as Vice President of the ILEA Boston Board of Directors, cementing his standing as a genuine industry leader.

BizBash 500: Most Influential Event Professionals in the U.S.

In 2021, BizBash Magazine named David Buono one of the 500 Most Influential Event Professionals in the United States. For a company built in Greater Boston, the BizBash 500 was a statement that what we were doing here resonated well beyond New England. It validated the caliber of our work at a national level and set the stage for everything that followed.

    Event Production of the Year

The Empty Wedding was conceived and produced at the height of the 2020 lockdowns: a full live event staged in October 2020 to prove that in-person gatherings could still be safe, meaningful, and powerful. Produced in partnership with the Massachusetts Live Events Coalition, it was equal parts statement and demonstration.

NACE Boston recognized it with the Event Production of the Year Award. Affirming that the work we do, even in the worst of circumstances, sets the standard.

  8. February

    Introducing Black Diamond

On February 14, 2024, Spinner Music Productions became Black Diamond Event Production. The date was deliberate. The name carries two meanings: the challenge and expertise of the black diamond ski trail, designed for those who seek what others can't handle; and the enduring elegance of the diamond itself, the right symbol for the weddings and celebrations at the heart of what we do.

The rebrand surprised the industry. The response did not: overwhelming, immediate, and enthusiastic.

  9. March

The Launch: Granite Links, Quincy, MA

March 12, 2024. Granite Links Golf Club, Quincy, Massachusetts. With the Boston skyline stretched across the horizon, Black Diamond officially introduced itself to the industry at a brand reveal gala built the same way we build every event: with intention, precision, and energy that fills every corner of the room.

Industry peers, collaborators, and supporters came out. What they saw was not just a rebrand. It was an arrival.

  10. 2025 And Beyond

    Where We Are Now

Since the rebrand, every expectation has been exceeded. Corporate event sales have surged. Wedding business remains the soul of the company. The team is growing and the identity is settled.

Black Diamond Event Production now serves clients across New England with a full suite of production services: DJ and MC entertainment, custom uplighting, LED dance floors, photo booths, photography, videography, and the kind of seamless execution that only comes from two-plus decades of doing this at the highest level. The work is not finished. It never is. That is exactly how we like it.
